Grasping the difference: what apraxia can tell us about theories of imitation Reply to Goldenberg

چکیده
is that patients build up cognitive representations of the gestures. Their inaccuracy shows up independently from the motor actions used for expressing their content. Brass and Heyes note that the old literature on neurological patients with apraxia is usually neglected but themselves neglect both old and new studies on apraxia. These studies cast severe doubts on the postulated superiority of sensory-motor (‘generalist’) over cognitive (‘specialist’) theories of imitation.

Imaging a cognitive model of apraxia: the neural substrate of gesture-specific cognitive processes.
The present study aimed to ascertain the neuroanatomical basis of an influential neuropsychological model for upper limb apraxia [Rothi LJ, et al. The Neuropsychology of Action. 1997. Hove, UK: Psychology Press]. Regional cerebral blood flow was measured in healthy volunteers using H2 15O PET during performance of four tasks commonly used for testing upper limb apraxia, i.e., pantomime of famil...
متن کاملChallenging traditions in apraxia.
Apraxia is a symptom on the border between cognition and motor control. It is predominantly caused by left brain damage and frequently accompanied by aphasia. Theories of apraxia have been dominated by a model of the conversion of mental images into motor commands proposed more than 100 years ago by the German psychiatrist Hugo Liepmann and revived for modern cognitive neurology by Norman Gesch...
متن کاملLETTER TO THE EDITOR Apraxia: a gestural or a cognitive disorder?
Sir, We read with great interest the article by Buxbaum et al. (2014) about the critical brain regions for tool-related and imitative actions. The authors performed voxel-based lesion–symptom mapping with data from 71 left brain-damaged patients. Three types of actions were examined: (i) pantomime to sight of tools (GestTool); (ii) pantomime on imitation (ImTool); and (iii) imitation of meaning...
متن کاملImpairment of motor planning in patients with Parkinson's disease: evidence from ideomotor apraxia testing.
Compared with a group of age matched controls, patients with Parkinson's disease scored significantly lower in testing for ideomotor apraxia. Imitation of movement sequences was affected more severely than performance of single movements. The degree of impairment was not related to severity of motor disability, but correlated strongly with the results of tests that measured visuospatial and vis...
